Children's Homes
Ana Maria House & Mihai House
Ana Maria House and Mihai House are two of Heart of a Child’s primary care facilities for abandoned and HIV+ children. Funded primarily from SERA Romania, Casa Mihai was opened in 1999 and Casa Ana Maria in 2001, the homes are named after two of our very dear children who passed away shortly after they were rescued from state institutions.
The homes are used to care for children who were forced to live on the streets, abandoned at state institutions or locked away in hospitals because they were infected with HIV/AIDS. These facilities are also sometimes used as a temporary foster care facility while Heart of a Child’s social workers identify suitable long-term arrangements for our children.
Our homes strive to function as traditional family-style homes that provide a sense of normalcy and routine for our children. Caretakers at Ana Maria House and Mihai House place an emphasis not only on providing basic care but promoting the children’s personal responsibility and social-integration at home and at school. Children share in work responsibilities and chores around the home and grow to function independently.
Ana Maria House and Mihai House are both long-term projects. Ana Maria House is supported largely by a combination of sources from AVSI, FDP, state, local and international sponsors. Mihai House receives generous support from SERA Romania, as well as funding from AVSI-FDP, state and local sponsors.
