At-risk children and children from poor families
Throughout our history we have sought to provide assistance both directly to families and to children who are in at-risk situations. When possible we have sought to find financiers and supporters to aid these children and their families. The following are some of our projects which have initiated:
1998: We opened the “Resource and Guidance Center for Children and Families” with financial support from the U.S.A. Peace Corps and the Open Society Foundation. The Center offered information, consulting, supporting materials and training courses for parents, social workers and volunteers.
1999 – 2006: Heart of a Child launched the “Sponsorship Program” in collaboration with Fundatia Pentru Dezvoltarea Popoarelor and AVSI Italy. The project was directed towards helping individual children from poor families, at-risk for family abandonment or dropping out of school, and children with chronic sicknesses and disabilities. Through the project, families had access to information, counseling, support and the ability to receive material support including basic foods, hygiene supplies and clothing for children. Through December 2006, over 770 children and parents had been helped through this project.
2002 – 2004: We established a sustainable program to prevent the abandonment and continued education for 120 children in 8 locations throughout Galati County. The projects “Back to School” and “My Place is at Home” were financed through the Princess Margareta Foundation in Romania. When necessary, after termination of the initial project financing, the children beneficiaries were cared for through our Educational Support Program. Over 300 children have benefited from these services.
2004 – 2006: We began to help children whose educational studies were interrupted due to difficulties in the family. Until now 29 youth and children from Galati and in surrounding villages were given support in order to continue their studies.
