Short History
The Heart of a Child Foundation was established in December 1996 by a group of Romanian volunteers seeking to help children who had been abandoned in hospitals and those living on the street.
In that dark and cold winter, a group of concerned local citizens banded together with a few students to reach out and address this glaring need in their community. With little formal training and support, the volunteers pooled their personal resources and set out to make a major difference in the lives of these neglected children.
At the beginning there were four street children brought in to stay in a rented apartment. Next, the volunteers began to care for children with HIV/AIDS that had been virtually abandoned, hidden in the wards of a state hospital. Together with these sick children, Heart of a Child’s founders took walks in the park and spoke with the kids about their hopes and dreams of living in a real home once again.
In time Heart of a Child’s vision continued to blossom into reality and the numbers of children in their care grew each year.
Today the Heart of a Child Foundation is more than a decade old and has developed into a professional organization serving a broad range of children and youth interests. Inspired by the selfless and compassionate nature of its founders, Heart of a Child administers and implements social services for children and families in need throughout the region, and has established itself as a proven social services leader in the Galati community.
